James Kernan

James Kernan was born in Crossmaglen, County Armagh, Ireland. He is a son of Frank Kernan the famous trainer and breeder of international show jumpers.

The Kernan family have a long involvement with horses, and from the start they have been involved in the training and provision of horses particularly for the sport of show jumping.

In 1968, Frank Kernan, father of James had a vision of the future and he asked his good friend Graziano Mancinelli of the Italian Show Jumping team to design “a state of the art” equestrian centre, which he then built.

Frank brought breeding to a new level by matching ”Lady Willpower” with a foreign champion stallion “Galoubet” and bred “Touchdown”.

James Kernan rode “Touchdown” when he represented Ireland in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 finishing as the highest placed Irish rider and also the same duo were part of the winnning Aga Khan team at Dublin Horse Show in 1992.

James, is recognised both nationally and internationally as one of the best trainers of show jumpers in the country. He was the only show jumper from the province to become junior European show jumping champion at Lucerne in 1974. He has competed at the highest international level on an individual basis and as part of the famous 3 in a row Irish Show jumping team of 1977,1978,1979 which won the Agha Khan cup at the RDS in Dublin for 3 consecutive years. This famous team consisted of: Captain Con Power, Paul Darragh, Eddie Macken.

James has a wealth of experience of international competition having competed at the highest level which makes training at Kernan’s unique and where he imparts his considerable experience to aspiring show jumpers. He has trained some of the current top show jumpers.

James Kernan took over the reins at the family equestrian centre 5 years ago and is now the principal director of the business.
